Candied Orange Slices are a delightful sweet treat made by simmering fresh orange slices in a simple sugar syrup until translucent and tender. These vibrant, tangy-sweet slices can be enjoyed on their own, dipped in rich dark chocolate for an indulgent twist, or rolled in sparkling sanding sugar for extra crunch and shine. Perfect as a garnish, snack, or gift!

Ingredients

Fruit

  • 2 large oranges

Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

Optional Coatings

  • 1/2 cup sanding sugar (optional)
  • 4 oz dark chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the Oranges: Slice the oranges into 1/4-inch thick rounds, carefully removing any seeds to ensure a smooth texture and pleasant eating experience.
  2. Prepare the Sugar Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar fully dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
  3. Simmer the Orange Slices: Gently add the orange slices to the simmering sugar syrup. Allow them to simmer for 45 minutes, flipping occasionally to ensure even cooking and coating on both sides.
  4. Dry the Candied Slices: Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the orange slices from the syrup and place them on a wire rack. Let them dry at room temperature for 4 to 6 hours until they become tacky and slightly dry but still pliable.
  5. Optional Decoration: If desired, melt the dark chocolate and dip the dried candied orange slices halfway, then let them set on parchment paper. Alternatively, roll the oranges in sanding sugar for a sparkling finish.

Notes

  • Remove seeds carefully before simmering to avoid bitterness and improve texture.
  • Flip slices occasionally during simmering to prevent sticking and ensure even candying.
  • Dry thoroughly on a wire rack to prevent sogginess and achieve the right chewy texture.
  • Store candied slices in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.
  • Dipping in dark chocolate adds richness and contrast to the citrus flavor, but is optional.
