Ingredients

Meat & Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • ½ of a medium-sized onion, minced finely
  • ½ of a green bell pepper, diced small
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed or finely minced

Sauce & Seasonings

  • ¼ cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon of kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ cup of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of concentrated tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon of packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika, optional

Bread & Toppings

  • 8 slices of frozen Texas toast (garlic or plain variety)
  • 1 to 1½ cups of shredded mozzarella or sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh chopped parsley for topping, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Toast Bread: Preheat your oven according to the Texas toast package instructions and bake each slice for about 5 to 6 minutes per side until lightly crisped and golden. Set aside once toasted.
  2. Cook Beef and Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, minced onion, and diced green bell pepper. Stir often and break up the meat while cooking for 5 to 7 minutes until beef is browned and vegetables softened.
  3. Add Seasonings and Simmer: Stir in garlic, salt, pepper, ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and water. Mix thoroughly to combine all flavors.
  4. Simmer Filling: Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 5 to 8 minutes until it thickens slightly. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  5. Assemble on Toast: Place toasted Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice.
  6. Add Cheese: Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese on top of each slice with the mixture.
  7. Bake to Melt Cheese: Place the baking sheet in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbling.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, optionally garnish with freshly chopped parsley, and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the sloppy joe mixture while simmering.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner protein option.
  • Use garlic-flavored Texas toast for extra flavor or plain if preferred.
  • To make it gluten-free, use gluten-free bread instead of Texas toast.
  • Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
