A flavorful Garlic Butter Mussels appetizer that combines steamed mussels with a rich garlic butter, Parmesan cheese, and fresh herbs, then broiled to golden perfection. Perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a gourmet appetizer at home.

Ingredients

For the Mussels

  • 2 pounds Mussels, fresh and tightly closed

For the Garlic Butter

  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 4 cloves Garlic, fresh and minced
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated (can substitute with Romano)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest (can substitute with vinegar)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Clean Mussels: Rinse the mussels under cold running water, scrubbing to remove any dirt or sand. Discard any mussels that are cracked or remain open when tapped.
  2. Steam Mussels: In a large pot, add ¼ cup of water and bring to a boil. Add the cleaned mussels, cover, and steam for 3-4 minutes until the mussels open, indicating they are cooked.
  3. Prepare Garlic Butter Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the unsalted butter, minced garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Mix well to form a flavorful garlic butter sauce.
  4. Arrange Mussels: Remove the steamed mussels from the pot and discard any unopened shells. Loosen the mussels from their bottom shells and arrange them on a baking sheet.
  5. Broil with Garlic Butter: Spoon the garlic butter mixture generously over each mussel. Place the baking sheet under a broiler for 2-4 minutes, or until the tops are golden and bubbling.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish if desired, and serve immediately with crusty bread for dipping into the flavorful sauce.

Notes

  • Ensure mussels are fresh and discard any that do not close when tapped before cooking.
  • The lemon zest can be substituted with a small amount of vinegar for acidity.
  • Use crusty bread to soak up the delicious garlic butter sauce.
  • Broil carefully to avoid burning the garlic butter topping; watch closely during the last minutes.
  • This dish is best served immediately while hot and flavorful.
