These Oven-Fried Feta Rolls with Chili Honey are a delightful and easy-to-make snack featuring crispy phyllo dough wrapped around a creamy feta and cream cheese filling, perfectly balanced with a sweet and spicy chili honey drizzle. This recipe offers a crunchy, savory bite with a touch of heat and sweetness, ideal for entertaining or a flavorful appetizer.

Ingredients

For the Feta Rolls:

  • 8 sheets phyllo dough (thawed)
  • 6 oz feta cheese (crumbled)
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter (for brushing)

For the Chili Honey:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the rolls.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, lemon zest, dried oregano, and black pepper until well blended and creamy.
  3. Assemble the rolls: Lay one sheet of phyllo dough flat and brush lightly with olive oil or melted butter. Repeat layering and brushing with 4 to 5 sheets, then cut into strips about 2-3 inches wide. Place a spoonful of the cheese filling on one end of each strip and roll tightly into cigar-shaped rolls. Place them seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with more oil or butter.
  4. Bake the rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for about 18 minutes or until the phyllo rolls are golden brown and crisp.
  5. Make the chili honey: While the rolls are baking, warm the honey in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in the red pepper flakes and apple cider vinegar, if using. Let the mixture steep for a few minutes and then remove from heat.
  6. Drizzle and serve: Once the feta rolls are baked and slightly cooled, drizzle the warm chili honey generously over them and serve immediately for a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory flavors.

Notes

  • Be very gentle when handling phyllo dough as it is delicate and can tear easily.
  • You can substitute oregano with fresh thyme or basil for a different herb flavor.
  • If you prefer less heat, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes in the chili honey.
  • These rolls are best enjoyed fresh and warm but can be reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
  • You can use either olive oil or melted butter for brushing; butter will give a richer flavor.
