Ingredients

Cake Base

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) cake mix (any flavor)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Filling and Coating

  • 1 cup buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 12 oz high-quality melting chocolate
  • 1/2 cup heart-shaped sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a baking pan to prevent sticking. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water, mixing until the batter is smooth and well blended.
  2. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake it for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool completely to room temperature.
  3. Crumble the Cake: After the cake is fully cooled, crumble it finely into a large mixing bowl to create a consistent texture for forming cake balls.
  4. Mix with Frosting: Gradually fold the buttercream frosting into the cake crumbs, mixing carefully until the mixture is moist enough to hold shape but not overly sticky. This creates the perfect consistency for rolling into balls.
  5. Form Cake Balls: Roll the cake and frosting mixture into 1-inch diameter balls, placing them evenly spaced on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and allow for easy handling.
  6. Melt Chocolate: Melt the high-quality melting chocolate according to package instructions, either using a microwave in short intervals or a double boiler method, ensuring the chocolate is smooth and fluid for coating.
  7. Coat Cake Pops: Dip each cake ball into the melted chocolate, allowing the excess to drip off so the coating is even and not too thick. While the chocolate is still wet, immediately sprinkle the heart-shaped sprinkles on to decorate.
  8. Set and Serve: Place the coated cake pops back on the parchment-lined sheet and let them rest until the chocolate coating is fully set and firm to the touch. Serve once completely hardened and enjoy your festive, homemade Valentine’s Day cake pops.

Notes

  • You can customize the cake flavor by choosing your favorite boxed cake mix, such as chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet.
  • Use high-quality melting chocolate for a smooth finish and better taste.
  • If you don’t have buttercream frosting on hand, you can make a simple homemade frosting using powdered sugar, butter, and a splash of milk.
  • The size of the cake balls can be adjusted slightly but 1-inch diameter is ideal for even baking and coating.
  • Store cake pops in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
